We’re preparing for Christmas at my dad’s house in North Carolina.
Look at this place! Look at the view (!)
which you can contemplate while sitting here
or here.
Or you can sit down in the den and stare at the very large flat screen tv (each chair and sofa seat reclines).
If it’s an action film, you can run on the treadmill. If it’s a bore, you can stare out the window – there’s a nice view there too.
Look at the baby grand and the familiar sight (sound) of my brother Jeff playing away, just like he used to do growing up.
(Although the piano top does have European knick-knacks.)
Look at this cozy dining room that has enough space to seat an extended family.
And the big spacious living room with a fireplace. (That’s my other brother Tom on the phone – even adoring uncles need a break from swinging niece and nephews in the air).
Look at the size of this washing machine! I wouldn’t even have to do a load every single day.
I’m gonna crawl in there and take a nap.
And this refrigerator – it doesn’t even fit in the view-finder of the camera! Wait til I show you what we’re dealing with back home for our family of five. I have that post all worked out.
Everything is so comfortable. Even the stairs are padded – I feel like I’m walking on a cloud.
Even the coffee is good, and that is one thing Europe always has on America.
This is the back yard.
What the heck am I doing living in France?
But the children are happy, discovering new things and rediscovering important relationships.
And being forced to speak English finally, if they want to be understood. (Yes!)
And feeling completely at ease because it is, after all, their home away from home.
This is North Carolina, the home of Grandma and Grandpa.
