Hi everyone,
I’ve been feeling rather maudlin lately for insignificant reasons not even worth going into. Perhaps you’ve noticed tearful comments on your blog? Do you think we should start a new thing? Like Friday Follow and Saturday Snapshot?
Maudlin Monday?
First of all I couldn’t think of anything original to reply to all your cheesy comments on my eggplant post. (Mozzarella cheesy, of course – huh huh). But that doesn’t mean that I wasn’t touched by or smiling at all of your comments. So thank you.
With all this maudliny feeling in the air, I decided to think about things I like.
Like …
I like that even the no-name supermarket chocolate here tastes so good.
I like that this guy is petrified in plastic and not about to come say hi.
I like that my rowdy English class of three 13 year old boys from last year is replaced by two docile female girls and the only serious male of the original three. Even he seems happier.
I like that another friend from Madagascar gave me vanilla beans a day after I used my last one!
And they will truly come in handy this week for the filet mignon of pork blog post recipe that uses vanilla beans. And coriander.
(Sorry to my Muslim friends. Oh and my Jewish friends. Oh and my vegetarian friends. Wait does anyone eat pork anymore?)
I will always like that this is the view outside my kitchen window.
I like that at least one kiwi plant is thriving.
I like that Young Knight is so enthusiastic about hamsters
so that he just wants to share them with everyone.
Even though he’s still not getting one.
I like that I see this innocent face of Young Lady
so much more than this (slightly cynical) one
or this one-day-will-be-a-teenager face.
Because she was my first baby, and time is marching on whether I’m ready or not.
I like that Petit Prince got into all my double-sided sticky foam tape and this is what my floor looks like even after cleaning it.
Actually no, I don’t like that.
What’s in mama’s purse?
Oh look! She forgot to put away her whiteboard markers!
There could be so much more to be maudlin about.
How do I get this dang thing open?
So it could be worse. Much worse.

They really do know how to find the things like markers, don’t they? Your little ones are so gorgeous 🙂
ladyjennie says
Yes, they have a knack for getting into things. And thank you!!! 🙂
Leanne says
Oh, dear. I’m not feeling very maudlin. But I am melancholy. Hmm mm . . . Maybe melancholy Monday’s? Your pictures make me smile, though. And I appreciate that! Have a good day, my dear. May tomorrow bring happy stability to us both.
ladyjennie says
Hm, now that you mention it, melancholy seems to sum it up better. May we both have a better day tomorrow.
Andi says
I am feeling maudlin myself and like the idea of a Maudlin Monday link-up 😉
ladyjennie says
That’s because you are the link-up queen. My social media guru. 😉

gorgeous children 🙂 smile…tomorrow awaits….
ladyjennie says
I did smile in this “tomorrow.”
Alison@Mama Wants This says
I’m kinda jealous that French no-name chocolate is so good.
And your children! They’re just adorable.
ladyjennie says
Thank you love.
Stephanie says
Maudlin is horrible. Sending hugs and good thoughts your way. And yes, the marker situation could have turned out so much worse!
ladyjennie says
Yes. So could the “opening the window while standing on a chair from the second story” have been worse. (But I was there. Plus the chair was blocking the window from opening).
julie gardner says
I eat pork.
🙂
ladyjennie says
And we have a taker!
Jane says
I have only recently given up pork…and beef, and chicken, sort of leaning vegan or more like the term I’ve been reading, flexitarian, because I still eat a bit of fish now and then. However, I will always love to read recipes no matter the ingredients and yours are always fun to read. Your children, by the way, are precious and so cheers to you and them and a Terrific Tuesday tomorrow!
ladyjennie says
Thank you. Today was, indeed, much better. (Probably because I scrubbed my house).
Alexandra says
You know, the downs are necessary.
They are, b/c they make the ups feel so good.
Kind of like when you’re sick, and then it feels SO GOOD to not be sick.
ladyjennie says
You’re full of wisdom my friend. 🙂
Caren with a "C" says
I hope you have something exciting coming your way to cheer you up. Your children are so precious! And that does sound like a much better English class! I have a son that is almost 13, so I can imagine how that must have been last year!
ladyjennie says
The problem is that two of them were totally not into it and they made my life very difficult. This year – much easier. (Now I just have to get through when my own children are teenagers).
Claudia says
Happy thoughts make happy people….so ba humbug to the maudlin and you go Girl for focusing on the feel good. Great message my Friend. And you know how I love that view from your kitchen window — even a photo does it justice!!!
rachel says
I love that you find things to be grateful for when you are feeling down. The pictures are beautiful. We miss France so much. And I love pork!
ladyjennie says
I know – I hope you come back!
ModernMom says
Yes my friend…I often try to remember it could always be worse and when I really think about it, it’s actually pretty good:)
PS Your babies are so beautiful!
ladyjennie says
Thank you dear.
amber says
Oh, I hear you on the maudlin. If you could see the drafts folder on my blog… I blame the fall atmosphere. Oh, and I remain jealous of your chocolate.
ladyjennie says
Fall can almost be joyful in its soul-sucking dreariness. But not this week.
Megan (Best of Fates) says
Seems like a lovely time! Though I totally see where you’re coming from, I’ve been on a bit of a downer myself!
ladyjennie says
I hope you’re feeling better soon!
Robin | Farewell, Stranger says
You’re right, so much worse. All those things are lovely (unless he actually made art with those markers, in which case I feel for you).
ladyjennie says
Thanks for visiting Robin! 🙂 And nope, I caught him before he had time to make his “art.”
Carole says
Can’t give up bacon.
The photo of Petit Prince with the marker is priceless!
ladyjennie says
I caught him just in time! (I love bacon too).
ladyjennie says
Oh cool – recipe coming tomorrow!
Ameena says
Great post….I bet your no-name supermarket chocolate is far superior to anything we have here in LA! I guarantee it actually.
Guess what? I’m coming to Paris this December for a couple of days, en route to Spain. Would love to meet up if possible, but I fully understand if it’s not.
elizabeth-flourishinprogress says
Maudlin, melancholy and morose. I wish I could get out of this funk. And quickly.
ladyjennie says
Me too. Sending you tons of positive thoughts!

Mmm….maudlin mondays? woebegone wednesdays? forlorn fridays…I gotta whole list! Regardless of which day, however, the blues are a drag. Sorry to hear it…Cooking helps (all those good smells); kids help (either hugging them or yelling at them when they misbehave…yes, that’s scapegoating but heck, isn’t that why we had kids in the first place? so we could stop yelling at our partners when we’re crabby?) I hope the chocolate helps…!
