You know what I love about Christmas in France? A pre-made cheese selection!
I get to try new things without having to do guess-work. Everything necessary is included: blue, goat, sheep, cow, soft and cooked cheese.
I love Christmas decorations bought at half-price
so we can build and make memories that my (one-day) grown children will be happy to return to.
“Hi!”
I love the traditional crèche Santons
and the more rustic homemade lamp-shades
with spray-painted pine cones made in school.
I love tree decorating when we finally get a tree.
And I love putting up decorations that we’ve had for many, many years.
I love cookie recipes brought over from America
to introduce to my French children who tend to eat more of this –
I love window decorations on French windows
and Christmas concerts
even when it sounds like the band from the Music Man.
(shhh – you didn’t hear that from me) 😉
And I love that my selection for “festive” meat at the grocery store was kangaroo, ostrich, boar, or reindeer. I chose reindeer.
It says in fine print that you encounter a risk of finding bits of shot in your roast.
What do you even serve with reindeer?
Sunny says
As your Alaska reader…reindeer is very similar to caribou. We have both here. We use it the same as beef. Its less fat (at least here) so sometimes have to add more liquid. Have a wonderful Christmas. 🙂

I have an Alaska reader! That seems so exotic. 🙂 Thank you for the tip – I am delighted to have it. There are instructions on the packaging, but I need all the help I can get.
Sunny says
Yes! Not too exotic, but a long ways from you. 🙂 I think i found your blog this past spring when we were planning our Paris trip. We were there in June. you had previously done a post about that kids science museum. 🙂

How can you serve reindeer at Christmas? One of Rudolph’s cousins? Maybe you should wait until Easter. Unless that is when you serve rabbit?!?! I loved everything else about this post though! I love seeing how other countries celebrate different holidays. Now I’m hungry for cheese ….
ladyjennie says
Oh dear, I’ve offended. 🙂 No, I saw the irony in it, but I’m not sensitive about things like that because my dad was a hunter. But I remember that you are a vegetarian (or very nearly so) so I can see how that would make you balk. Sending big hugs to your entire beautiful family.

Wow, I have no idea what “festive meat” I would choose! Maybe boar.
I’m not very adventurous.
I love these things about Christmas in France too!

Yes boar was the safest choice. I had gone looking for venison, but there was only a really expensive piece so I chose this instead as the closest choice. I just found out that you can’t buy venison in the stores in the States. Merry Christmas Tamara!

Sweet, Jennie,
thank you for allowing me to peek inside your “life in France!”
Merry Christmas! Always. xxx
